New Recycling Opportunities at the M and N Landfill
Effective January 1, 2012 regular recycling bins, as well as, an electronic recycling bin will be available at the M and N Landfill during regularly scheduled hours.
Electronic Recycling Bin:
¨ Display devices: monitors, televisions
¨ Desktop computers; Portable computers
¨ Computer peripherals: mice and keyboards
¨ Printing, copying and multifunctional devices
¨ Telephones and telephone answering machines; Cellular devices and pagers
¨ Home theatre in a box: equalizers, amplifiers, speakers, tuners and turntables
¨ Aftermarket vehicle audio and video devices
¨ Image, audio and video devices: home/portable/non-portable
Please note it is a condition of the bin being placed at the landfill and our ability to use it that no items or parts of items can be removed from the bin.
Regular Recycling Bins:
¨ Glass Bottles and jars (not light bulbs/sheet glass) – please rinse bottles and jars to remove any food or residue; please remove lids; you do not have to remove labels
¨ Commingled Plastic and Metal food and beverage containers (#1 PETE and #2 HOPE) – please rinse cans to remove any food or residue; please push the lids of metal cans inside and squeeze the top in slightly to keep the lid in the can; please remove caps and lids from all plastic bottles; you do not have to remove labels
¨ Cardboard and Boxboard – please flatten all boxes to fit in depot slots; please do not deposit plastic or wax board (ie no milk cartons)
¨ Newsprint – includes flyers, magazines, catalogues, paper and hard back books (please remove the cover and place in Cardboard bin and the remaining insides into the Newsprint bin); keep shredded paper in a bag rather than depositing loose; do not deposit “Tim Horton” cups in either Cardboard or Newsprint bins – include with regular household garbage.
The Township of Hilton no longer contributes to the recycling bins at the corner of Hwy 17 and Hwy 548 so please do not use that location for your recycling needs. Both the Village of Hilton Beach and the Township of Hilton will receive a rebate for the volume of recycling deposited at the M and N Landfill which will help to reduce the overall cost of providing this service.
Household Special Waste Disposal
The Township of Hilton has an agreement with the City of Sault Ste. Marie to allow access for its residents to deposit hazardous waste at the City’s Household Special Waste Depot.

Thursdays and Fridays: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
Saturdays: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
The site is currently only open for a portion of the year, from April to October.

Items considered Hazardous: Acids; Aerosols (spray paint, hair spray); Antifreeze; Bases (cleaning solutions); Batteries (automotive & household); Fire Extinguishers; Flammables (cleaning solvents); Fluorescent light tubes; Oil and Oil Filters; Oxidizers (chlorine, fertilizer); Paint; Pesticides; Pharmaceuticals (prescriptions, etc); Propane Cylinders (up to 100 lbs); Sharps (needles packed in plastic containers); Styrofoam.
Only oil and antifreeze containers can be returned to the residents. All other containers will remain at the Household Special Waste site. Containers must be no larger than a 25 litre pail.
